Statement from Ardelia Holmes on Death of Renee Good During ICE Operation

Date : January 8, 2025

I am deeply saddened by the death of Renée Good during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. According to public reporting, federal agents were conducting an active enforcement action in the area when they encountered Ms. Good in her vehicle. Any loss of life during a law enforcement action is devastating, and for many communities across this country, it is a familiar and painful reality.

When deadly force is used by federal agents, it must meet the highest standard and be reserved for truly imminent threats. Conflicting accounts and emerging video footage make it clear that the public deserves a full, transparent investigation, not only into what happened in this case, but into whether existing use-of-force protocols were followed and whether those protocols are sufficient.

Incidents like this raise serious questions about how federal enforcement operations are conducted, how decisions are made in high-stress moments, and how accountability is ensured when things go wrong. These questions matter not just for one family or one city, but for communities that have long lived with the consequences of aggressive enforcement and the normalization of loss.

As someone preparing to serve in Congress, I believe it is our responsibility to demand clarity, oversight, and restraint, and to continually review whether federal agencies are operating in a way that protects human life, dignity, and public trust. My heart is with Ms. Good’s family, and I remain committed to policies that ensure safety, accountability, and justice for everyone.
